Accountable Healthcare Staffing was only founded in 2012, but its executives came with years of experience in healthcare staffing.

The company was founded by a core group of people that also founded Medical Staffing Network in the late 1990s. That firm was acquired by Cross Country Healthcare Inc. in 2014, but former leaders went on to found Accountable Healthcare with funding from a round of private angel investors. In fact, the CEO and COO were executives at Medical Staffing Network, and both have worked together for 20 years.

And that experience is paying off for Accountable Healthcare, the Boca Raton, Fla.-based company ranks No. 8 on the list of fastest-growing US staffing firms.

What is fueling the company’s growth? CEO Kevin Little says Accountable has opened more than a dozen new locations. Its process for selecting sites includes validating a marketplace and finding local branch talent,

Accountable has also expanded its offerings over time. For example, the company formed a correction division to supply healthcare staff to correctional sites. It’s a specialized line, Little noted. A person working at a regional hospital on Monday is unlikely to work in a correctional facility on a Tuesday. The company also began a product line providing nursing and allied into school settings.

Nursing ranks as the company’s single largest product line with a majority of nurse revenue coming from travel and contract assignments. And the experience Accountable brings is both on the business side and the nursing side — for example, Accountable Healthcare’s VP of clinical services, Merry Fort, is a registered nurse and serves on the Georgia Board of Nursing. Chief Operating Officer Lynne Mathews is a registered nurse as well.

“Our philosophy is we are not an ivory tower company, we stay very grounded in the field,” Mathews says.

With executives having been in the nurses’ shoes, the company is better able to advocate for its nurses and offer support, she says. It also gives the company insight on the right person to hire.

“We understand the type of nurse that is most likely to be successful,” Mathews says.

The firm also supplies allied healthcare providers, locum tenens and advanced practice professionals.

Unlike many firms on the list of fastest-growing staffing firms, Accountable made a number of acquisitions. It had 10 between the start of 2012 and the end of 2016 — although the list disregards revenue from acquisitions when the five-year CAGR is calculated.

However, in July, Accountable Healthcare announced that it was being acquired itself by Mitsui & Co. Ltd., a Tokyo-based investment firm.

“Accountable will be a great extension to the platform we have established so far, and represents a strategically compelling opportunity for Mitsui to position itself to provide full suite of healthcare workforce solutions to our healthcare clients in the US and abroad,” said Seiki “Stan” Hirota, chairman of UHS Partners Inc., a subsidiary formed by Mitsui.
